The after escape trunk provided a means to escape from this compartment in an emergency. The procedure was slightly different than the forward torpedo room escape trunk. The large (red) flange with the inner hatch had to be unbolted and removed. An extension sleeve, stored in the trunk is removed, inverted and then bolted to the flange. The compartment was sealed, each man donned a Momsen Lung, then the entire compartment was flooded. Once the pressure was equalized with the surrounding sea, a crewman went up the trunk and opened the outer hatch.
