This is the 4"-50 caliber deck gun on board the USS LING.  The USS LING was originally equipped with two 5"-25 caliber deck guns, one located here, the other located on the fore deck.  While almost all W.W.II submarines were equipped with deck guns, most captains preferred to avoid surface gun engagements.  The deck gun was used on small vessels that were not worth a torpedo, and where there was little risk of return fire. Ammunition for the deck gun was passed through the ammunition scuttle in the deck.

The USS LING was stripped of all armament by the US Navy, including the 40mm anti-aircraft guns.  We were fortunate to find a 4"-50 caliber deck gun to mount on her deck, as well as two 20mm anti-aircraft guns to replace the 40mm's.
