The Forward Engine Room houses #1 and #2 main engines. The USS LING has four Fairbanks-Morse, vertically
opposed, 2-cycle diesel engines. Each engine generates 1600 BHP. The main engines
extend from below the platform deck into the engine space, with
#1 main engine on the starboard side and #2 main engine on the port side. Main
generators, #1 and #2, built by General Electric, are connected to
the main engines. Each generator is rated at 1,100 kW and was used to generate electricity
to charge the batteries or to run the main propulsion motors (the engines are not directly
connected to the propellers).
